I have always been in a kind of dichotomy: the applied versus the theoretical, the academic and the professional.
First of all I am a psychologist. Not the clinical or the personnel psychologist type. I have been all my professional life "a little bit different" in how I use what I learn or explore about human behaviour, how to measure it, how to make research about it.
I started in the University, learning a lot on experimental design. I actually lectured on that. Even drafted a book that is available somewhere in my blog. It has been very useful for making some really good work on subjective video quality measurement. It is rather difficult to apply in other contexts, usability measurement in particular.
Then I started working for Telefónica R&D, in what at that time was called "human factors" or "ergonomics" and now is usability, or user experience. UX in short (what would we do without acronyms!).
We had the best of times when we created a truly multidisciplinary team, creating a usability lab, fine-tuning a usability measurement methodology for mobile services, and producing some interesting protoyping software. We even created a Telefónica proprietary typeface (font). The best years of my professional life. Most of it is published, should also be in the blog (haven't you visited it yet?).
Then the academic side re-appeared and decided to stop working for a couple of months to write my PhD. thesis. Crazy? Maybe. But it worked. Two months in front of the PC screen, and at the end a pile of 200 something pages, which I am still proud of. It is about one of those issues I like so much: ROC curves… Again being in the middle: statistics, experimental Psychology, diagnostic systems, data mining… The application field? Fidelization. When I started I remember my (I shall say all's) surprise about the contents of the subjects in Psychology: "animal psychology", statistics, research methodology, … Nothing to do, at least at the beginning, with the topics I expected, like illnesses, clinical Psychology…
But I did manage quite well. Now, I remember those years with a smile, it was definitely fun, meeting so many different people, with some very good teachers.
I started being seduced by statistics at the third course in Psychology. This was in 1987. I volunteered to make the statistical analyses of the psychometric tests filled by our classmates, in a … so difficult to remember the name… it was a mainframe (a CYBER something). It ran BMDP stats package -command based, all batch-processing, the old fashioned way-, and I learnt the hard way how to use that thing. Have you ever used the Fortran fixed data format? This was the standard then. I will always remember, 3F2, 2F2.3, … And the numbers all spread in the green phospore displays.
I started wearing lenses from then on, one of the immediate effects of starting my career in "a little-bit-different way" from others surrounding me.
I finished Psychology, quite happily, and with strong preference towards research, statistical analyses of human behavior, research methodology… What to do then? Only possible way to apply things I had learnt was University. But this is anything but easy in Spain, now and then.
I was quite lucky -and clever- to ask for a State fellowship in something few people asked for: "consumer research". So I got one of the very few grants in Spain for staying doing what I wanted in the University.
I remember that period as a troubled one, all the time fighting myself with the requirements of an academic carreer (in Spain this means you have to devote a great deal of your time to "warming the chair", doing what other serior professors want you to do… Things like that.
One of the decisions that, again, set a point before-and-after in my life: I decided to move from my parents' home and live by myself. If you are reading this from outside Spain you might think this is a ridicolous claim: living by yourself at 24. But for Spain, now and the, this was a strange thing.
So I spent four wonderful years teaching sparingly in the Madrid University about research methodology, helping others to write their Ph.D. Theses (mainly by carrying out their statistical analyses), and arranging my own home. All of them quite fruitful actions. In particular, that of moving from my parents' home. I have learned so much in the meantime that I can only think this is one of the best decisions in my life.

Amplia experiencia en investigación internacional: participé en proyectos de investigación de la Comisión Europea en el VI Programa Marco (ACEMEDIA, MESH, e-Sense), del V Programa Marco (E-TRACKING, BUSMAN, MOBILEARN, PRISMA y BEEP), y de programas previos en Factores Humanos de las líneas RACE (LUSI), ACTS (USINACTS), TELEMATICS (TRENDS), y de 2 proyectos EURESCOM (P903 y P1003). Todos estos proyectos se realizan en consorcios de empresas y universidades a nivel europeo. Enlaces detallados a cada uno de ellos se proporcionan más adelante en este CV.
Nombrado vicepresidente del Comité Técnico de Factores Humanos (TC-HF) de ETSI (http://portal.etsi.org) en marzo de 1998, posición a la que renuncié en 2002. ETSI es el principal organismo de estandarización europeo en el campo de las telecomunicaciones. Como responsable de evaluación de usabilidad en el Comité Técnico, he sido Rapporteur (relator o coordinador) de dos ETSI Guides: EG 201 103 "Human Factors issues in MIRS" y EG 201 472 "Usability evaluation for the design of telecommunications systems, terminals and services". Líder del proyecto STF 183 (proyecto pagado por ETSI; "Multimodality of icons and pictograms"; 2001-2002). Relator de ETSI EG 202 048: "Human Factors (HF); Guidelines on the multimodality of icons, symbols and pictograms".
